Earth Hour: HZAU Acts to Protect Environment

On March 21, the second “SDGs China: Youth in Action” was held at HZAU. Yu Changxue, director of the China Center for International People-to-People Exchange (CCIPPE) of the Ministry of Education, and Wang Conyan, deputy party secretary of HZAU Party Committee delivered a speech respectively. Dr.He Changchui, former deputy director-general of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (UNFAO) gave a themed speech entitled “Achieving Sustainable Development Goals: Youth’s Role to Play”. Attendees also included heads from the CCIPPE, Undergraduate School and the College of Resources and Environment of HZAU.

Wang noted that Earth Hour has attached great importance to environmental protection and harmonious co-existence between man and nature. It has kept in line with the aspiration to build a community of shared future for mankind and President Xi’s philosophy on ecological conservation. The Green Association and many other student volunteering organizations have been advocating green development both on and off campus, with an aim to inspire more people to protect the planet. They have shouldered the responsibility to push forward sustainable development. Wang called on all Chinese people to get involved to make our country more beautiful with lusher mountains, clearer water and fresher air, and achieve harmony between and man and nature.

Yu reviewed the responsibility and mission of the CCIPPE, and highlights and implementation of SDGs China. The inaugural event in 2023 attracted students from more than 300 colleges and universities at home and abroad, with over 110,000 participation, among which HZAU students topped the list. He acknowledged HZAU as a pioneer in China’s higher agricultural education and highlighted its contribution to internationalization and talent training. He also thought highly of the passion, devotion and remarkable achievements of its students. At the end of the speech, he urged the students to better their understanding of sustainable development, Chinese path to modernization and building of a community of shared future for mankind. They were expected to unleash their potential and creativity to devote themselves to a thriving China and a better world.

He analyzed main problems and challenges in implementation of UN SDGs. He proposed three suggestions: first, learn more about what the SDGs are, and why we need them to enhance awareness of environmental protection and sustainable development; second, participate in various public activities to honor commitment; third, embrace more responsibility to engage in international cooperation for collectively addressing global challenges and contributing to sustainable development.

During the event, members of HZAU’s Cycling Association pedaled bicycles to convert kinetic energy into green and clean electricity, thereby lighting up the eco-globe. The opening of the second “SDGs China: Youth in Action” event was officially announced by He, Yu, Wang, and Tan Mijia, a student representative of HZAU’s the Green Association. After the speech, students sat in circles to create recycled crafts.

The event was hosted by CCIPPE, and co-organized by HZAU. Earth Hour inspired students to play their part in environmental protection. Featuring the commonality among Chinese path to modernization, the goal of building a community of shared future for mankind, and SDGs, it aimed to help students know more about the significance of SDGs China and China’s action, thus engaging more youths to protect our common home and safeguard our future.
